Maria João Alves, third year student at the Law School of the University of Minho, was selected to develop a six months’ research project together with the InclusiveCourts’ team, in the framework of the UMinho Prize for Initiation in Scientific Research 2021. The project is entitled “Gender and cultural diversity in the case law of Portuguese courts” and will be developed between 15 June and 15 December 2021. The goal of the project is to assess the way in which gender issues clash or overlap with cultural arguments in the case law of Portuguese courts, on the basis of the inventory conducted by the InclusiveCourts’ team and in light of the academic debates on gender equality, intersectionality and multiculturalism. The research outputs will include the development of a typology of cases and the presentation of the analytical overview in a paper to be submitted for publication with an international peer-reviewed journal. The research will be done under the supervision of Patrícia Jerónimo, Principal Investigator of InclusiveCourts.
