Human Rights and Cultural Diversity in Latin America

Lorena Ossio Bustillos, of the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy in Munich, and Ingo Wolfgang Sarlet, of the Pontifícia Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, shared with faculty and researchers from the University of Minho their perspectives on the interplay between human rights and cultural diversity on the basis of the experiences of Bolivia and Brazil, among other Latin American countries. Lorena Ossio Bustillos spoke about the challenges of egalitarian legal pluralism in Latin America, focusing on the social benefits programmes aimed at indigenous peoples, while Ingo Wolfgang Sarlet spoke about the constitutional legal framework for the guarantee of ethnic and racial equality and the fight against racism in Brazil, including affirmative action. The seminar was organized by Patrícia Jerónimo, who chaired and acted as discussant. It was held on 2 October 2023 at the Law School building, with funding from the Research Centre for Justice and Governance (JusGov) and as part of programme 30 Years, 30 Events which commemorates the Law School’s anniversary.
