Patrícia Jerónimo talks about the treatment of minorities by state authorities in Portugal

Patrícia Jerónimo talked with sociologist Fátima da Cruz Rodrigues, from the University of Porto, in a new session of the webinar series “Academia à Conversa”, hosted by the Students’ Association of the University of Minho (AAUM), on the topic of the treatment of minorities by state authorities in Portugal. The topics addressed covered, among others, the gap between the official discourse and the popular sentiment about ethnic/racial minorities and immigration, the legislative measures adopted to fight discrimination and their meager practical results, the obstacles (bureaucratic and other) faced by immigrants and refugees in their path to integration into Portuguese society, and the recent initiatives adopted to fight racism and to strengthen the training of law enforcement agents in areas such as human rights, citizenship and ethics.
