Ana Rita Simões, Law School graduate at the University of Minho, was selected to develop a six months’ research project together with the InclusiveCourts’ team, in the framework of the UMinho Prize for Initiation in Scientific Research 2020. The project is entitled “The principle of equality in the «multicultural case law» of Portuguese courts” and will be developed between 1 July and 30 December 2020. The goal of the project is to map the way in which Portuguese courts interpret and apply the principle of equality when adjudicating cases that involve ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities, on the basis of the inventory conducted by the InclusiveCourts’ team. One of the research outputs will be the development of a typology of cases according to jurisdiction, legal issue, minority group, formal/substantial equality, direct/indirect discrimination, reasonable accommodation, etc. The research will be done under the supervision of Patrícia Jerónimo, Principal Investigator of InclusiveCourts.
