Portuguese as International Language and Migration

Patrícia Jerónimo was a guest speaker in a panel entitled “Contact, migration and refuge”, part of the programme of the IV Conference of Studies in Portuguese as International Language, which was held online on 6 and 7 May 2024. The panel was chaired by one of the conference organisers, Martina Delfino, of the University of Liverpool, and included speakers Marcus Vinícius da Silva, of the Federal University of Roraima (Brazil), and Paulo Feytor Pinto, of the University of Coimbra (Portugal). Patrícia Jerónimo’s talk was entitled “Migration and Portuguese Language”, and covered inter alia the international consensus regarding the importance of ensuring that migrants have access to language competences in the language of the host country while, at the same time, having the opportunity to keep their ties with their countries of origin, namely, through the teaching of the mother tongues.
