Proposed amendment to the Nationality Act debated at the Catholic University

The Law Faculty (Porto School) of the Portuguese Catholic University hosted, on 18 July 2025, a conference on the proposed amendment to the Portuguese Nationality Act with the title The New Proposal of Nationality Act: Principles, Problems, and Perspectives. The conference brought together academics and legal professionals to debate the grounding principles of the nationality policy, the challenges of compliance with international, EU, and Portuguese constitutional law, as well as the practical consequences of the amendment in its day-to-day implementation, including in the field of criminal law. The speakers included Rui Armindo Freitas (Deputy Secretary of State for the Presidency), Rui Moura Ramos (University of Coimbra), Patrícia Jerónimo (University of Minho), Jorge Pereira da Silva (Portuguese Catholic University), Marta Vicente (Portuguese Catholic University), Conceição Cunha (Portuguese Catholic University), and Vitória Andrade e Silva (Registry and Notary Institute). Scientific coordination was by Manuel Fontaine Campos (director of the Faculty of Law – Porto School of the Portuguese Catholic University) and Francisco Quelhas Lima (Faculty of Law of the Portuguese Catholic University).
